Album of the Week: Spirituals by Santigold

For her fourth album under the moniker Santigold, Santi White continues to push the genre limits, refusing to be easily defined. With a background in punk music, Santigold has had many experiences in her life being in areas of the music industry where spaces for black women are not recognized or held. A lot of the lyrics in Spirituals reflects those experiences, in the music industry and in life.

White grew up listening to artists like Fela Kuti, Nina Simone, Marvin Gaye and Burning Spear. She has incorporated the influence of those diverse musicians into her music, leaning towards pop one song, reggae the next with some afro-futurism to round it out.

Tune in to KAXE each week to hear from our Album of the Week!
