President Clinton went to North Carolina today to address the annual convention of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). His appearance before the civil rights group came after his Republican opponent, Bob Dole, was criticized for turning down an offer to appear before the group earlier in the week. Dole said he had a scheduling conflict, but some of his opponents took the opportunity to say that Republicans had written off the black vote in their effort to cater to the more conservative wing of the party. NPR's Elizabeth Arnold reports.
