Obi Best: 'Who Loves You Now'
Up until this summer, Los Angeles-based singer Alex Lilly had been known mostly for her role as backup singer for pop duo The Bird and the Bee. Recently, however, Lilly embarked upon a new project and took the spotlight for herself. With the help of 10 of her friends, she's created the band Obi Best and recorded the keyboard-driven pop debut, Capades.
Liz Durrett: 'You Live Alone'
Liz Durrett is finally stepping out of her shell on her third and latest album, Outside Our Gates. Known for her sparse and somber Southern folk music, the Athens, Ga.-based musician has put together a release that still has plenty of gloom but is now balanced by over a dozen guest musicians, including her uncle, Vic Chesnutt.
Arborea: 'Black Mountain Road'
Shanti and Buck Curran, who write and record under the name Arborea, are pitched as a husband-and-wife folk duo from Maine, but there's very little in their songs that resembles traditional roots music. Arborea is mostly an experimental album, with the Currans bowing and plucking their stringed instruments to create spacey, ambient drones.
Wye Oak: A Much-Needed Punch In The Gut
Wye Oak build songs around simple ideas that can seem opaque, but always pack an unexpected kick. Take It In could be about a fight between two people who know each other very well — in addition to being bandmates, Stack and Wasner are a couple — and bash at each other with everything they have in an effort to keep the relationship alive.
James Francies: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert
James Francies delivers a poignant and powerful Tiny Desk (home) concert.
Over The Rhine: A Whole Life In A Song
Named for the Cincinnati neighborhood where the band used to live, Over the Rhine is husband and wife Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist. For more than 20 years, the two have written lyrics that they hope connect on a universal level.
