Homey Intimacy, Soaked in Strings
Often recalling the rustic delicacy of Iron and Wine — if it were soaked in strings and robbed of some of its stark clarity — Horse Feathers' music radiates homey intimacy, as Peter Broderick fleshes out Justin Ringle's voice and guitar with all manner of warmly unamplified instrumentation.
Dreamy and Despairing, Dark but Sweet
Danish producer and DJ Anders Trentemoller specializes in atmospheric, slow-paced electronic dub. But he lightens up the texture on "Moan," an enchanting song driven by gently pulsing minor-key rhythms and Ane Trolle's whispery, tentative vocals.
'Take These Thoughts,' Drenched in Harmony
From its name to its stripped-down acoustic Americana, the L.A.-based duo Chris & Thomas revels in straightforward simplicity. But make no mistake: There's nothing easy about writing songs as purely infectious as "Take These Thoughts."
First Listen: Angel Olsen, 'Burn Your Fire For No Witness'
The singer's new album is the musical equivalent of a deep, questioning stare from a lover. These are delicate songs, with lyrics stripped to their essence.
Songs We Love: Lowell & Icona Pop, 'Ride'
Love is in the air on this spiky, feisty pop anthem, but it's anything but tender.
LoneLady: Itchy And Scratchy
If it were 1983, LoneLady's debut album, Nerve Up, would surely fit in on the storied rosters of Factory or 4AD Records. Singer Julie Campbell's ability to focus on restraint gives "Immaterial" the skittering quality of a lost new-wave classic.
Elephant Micah: Message In The Mystery
Ambiguous words, delivered with earnest passion, lend special power to "Airline Living." It's the sort of song that's sure to force different meanings onto different people, depending upon their place in life and state of mind.
Miles Zuniga: Turning Therapy Into Sweet Sounds
Zuniga's gift for turning anguish into hummable pop is on full display in "Working on a Love Song."
The Church On World Cafe
Untitled #23 is the latest record in The Church's 30-year long. The Australian band features progressive instrumentation and dense, guitar-driven counterpoint. They visit the World Cafe for an interview and in-studio performance.
South Korea says it has reached a deal with the US for the release of workers in a Georgia plant
More than 300 South Korean workers were detained in an immigration raid on Thursday. Presidential chief of staff Kang Hoon-sik said South Korea plans to send a charter plane to bring the workers home.
In Selma, A 'Final Crossing' For John Lewis Across The Edmund Pettus Bridge
In 1965, John Lewis was nearly killed as he led a group of protesters across the Edmund Pettus Bridge to protest racial discrimination in voting. On Sunday, his body crossed that bridge one last time.
How To See The 'Ring Of Fire' Today
Early risers across the Northern Hemisphere will be able to see an eclipse Thursday morning when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun.
Turkey Welcomes Syrian Refugees As Kurds Close In On ISIS
A push by Kurdish forces against a self-declared Islamic State stronghold in Syria is making gains but displacing thousands of Arabs along the way, forcing them over the border into Turkey.
