BAGLEY — A 24-year-old Bagley man is in custody after authorities in Clearwater County investigated a deadly assault that occurred near Lower Rice Lake early Sunday morning, Sept. 21.
Authorities were first dispatched to a Bagley address on report of a man who was not breathing just before 1 a.m. A news release reported first responders attempted lifesaving measures, but the victim, 26-year-old Tray McCollum, was pronounced dead at 1:35 a.m. at the Sanford Health-Bagley Medical Center.
According to a witness statement described in the criminal complaint, Christyan Matthew Logan, McCollum and the witness went wild rice harvesting on Saturday and later left to purchase alcohol. Upon returning to Lower Rice Lake Road, the witness said Logan began assaulting them and McCollum. The witness told authorities Logan was stomping on McCollum's head before ending the assault, when McCollum was not breathing and turning blue.
The witness and Logan transported McCollum back to his Bagley residence, where the 911 call was placed. Emergency department staff alerted investigators with the Bagley Police Department, Clearwater County Sheriff's Office and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension that McCollum's head showed signs of extreme trauma, with substantial damage to the left eye and nose consistent with extreme force.
Logan was on the scene when first responders arrived, according to the complaint, but was arrested later that morning in Fosston.
Logan has a lengthy criminal history, including serving prison time for an August 2022 felony domestic assault. He's also been convicted of multiple other felonies, including first-degree damage to property in 2023, fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle in 2023, second-degree burglary in 2023, and two felony thefts in 2021. He was arraigned Monday on two counts of unintentional murder in the second degree, and one count in the third degree.
Logan's unconditional bail was set at $2 million, and his next court appearance is set for Sept. 29.
