NEVIS — Nevis voters overwhelmingly rejected the school district's $41.55 million building bond referendum in the Tuesday, April 8, special election.
Seventy-eight percent of voters (988) cast ballots against the measure, according to unofficial results.
The funds would have been used to expand and renovate school facilities. Nevis’ school was built nearly 40 years ago for nearly half its current enrollment. Without the additional funds, the district cannot make the significant upgrades it says it needs.
In a statement posted Wednesday, Superintendent Gregg Parks said folks believe the district has needs, and they will work to re-engage with the community to find the right solutions.
"While this is not the outcome we had hoped for, our commitment to Nevis students and their future remains strong," Parks wrote.
"Our school has served generations of learners, and the school board and administration will continue working closely with teachers, staff, parents, and residents to ensure it remains a place of excellence for years to come."
