Northern Swimmers Head to State Championships

There are several students in the KAXE/KBXE listening area participating in the Girls Swim & Dive Championships at the U of M Aquatics Center this week.

Dive events took place Wednesday afternoon (11/16/16) with Amanda Hernesman of Grand Rapids, Nyah Adams and Anikka Mattonen of Hibbing and Alyssa Mathis of International Falls all competing in the 1 meter dive event.

Class A swimming preliminaries start Thursday (11/17/16) at noon with Bemidji, Cloquet-Esko-Carlton, Crookston, Eveleth-Gilbert, Grand Rapids, Hibbing, International Falls, Mesabi East, Park Rapids, Thief River Falls and Two Harbors participating from our listening area.

The swimmer to watch is Makayla Souminen of Cloquet-Esko-Carlton.  She is participating in the 50 and 100 freestyle.  As a sophomore, this is her 3rd trip to state.  Last year, she placed third overall with a time of 23.82 in the 50 freestyle and fourth in the 100.

Brainerd High school is the only northern team to be competing in in Class AA.  Their first and only event is 200 medley relay.  They will be facing tough competition against the third time returning state champs Wayzata.

For a complete meet program visit the Minnesota High School League’s website at mshsl.org and be sure to tune in Monday to the Sports Page for a report of the how our local teams did.

Sarah Bignall has led KAXE through a period of bold growth and recognition since becoming CEO/General Manager in 2022, including being named Ampers 2025 Station of the Year. Under her leadership, the station’s award-winning newsroom has expanded local coverage across Northern Minnesota and elevated KAXE’s digital reach to record levels. She’s also been sought out by outlets like KARE11, the Star Tribune, MinnPost, and Politico to speak on the far-reaching effects of CPB funding cuts on rural public media.
