Fiction Family: Folk-Pop, With Caffeine

The unlikely collaboration between Jon Foreman of Switchfoot and guitarist Sean Watkins of Nickel Creek started out as a way for two friends to kick back amid their busy tour schedules. Instead of simply combining the alt-rock and progressive bluegrass of their respective bands, the pair created a new acoustic folk-pop sound that exudes '60s flair.

Fiction Family was released in January after several rounds of informal home recording sessions and caffeine-inspired changes. The duo's radio-friendly blend of roots and modern rock is acoustically oriented, while its coffee-shop roots remain evident in the pair's simultaneously laid-back and caffeinated style.

In a session with host David Dye, the duo recalls the difficulties of remote collaboration, as well as the self-imposed "Cowboy Rules" that keep the two men in line.
