Bonnie Raitt 'Not Broken' on New CD

Listen

Bonnie Raitt's new record, Souls Alike, is her eighteenth album -- and the first on which she is credited as a producer. The songs reflect the efforts of clever songwriters from Maia Sharp and David Batteau to Randall Bramblett.

The winner of nine Grammy Awards, Bonnie Raitt was born to a musical family -- her father was the noted Broadway singer John Raitt -- of Carousel, Oklahoma! and others -- and her mother was the pianist Marge Goddard.

But her parents also influenced her latest work in an unexpected, and sad way. John Raitt died in February following a prolonged illness, just months after Raitt's mother, Marge Goddard, died unexpectedly from complications related to Alzheimer's disease.

It's not hard to imagine that those events are what led Raitt to include the song "I Will Not Be Broken" on her new record. Its message of resistance and resolve only deepens when the recent events of Raitt's life are taken into account.

This segment first aired on Nov. 4, 2005.
