Arts Improve Economic, Social & Cultural Health: The Creative MN 2019 Report

Mar 20, 2019

“Looking at Region 2, which is Beltrami, Hubbard, Clearwater, Lake of the Woods and Mahnomen counties, the economic impact … from the arts sector is just short of $14M a year.”  -Sheila Smith

The 2019 Creative MN report is a comprehensive assessment of the impacts the arts sector has on the economic, social, and cultural health of the state of Minnesota.  In this segment of Area Voices, Sheila Smith, Executive Director of MN Citizens for the Arts, explains how data was collected, the economic boon that arts create in communities, how the arts improve social culture, and the value of arts education in schools as a means of preparing kids for the workplace.

“The skills that the arts bring are a different kind of intelligence…critical thinking and problem solving… The arts bridge multiple disciplines and help people build a more complex view of the world that helps innovation and creativity…  It’s one of the things that businesses are hungry for are workers who not only are really good at the job and show up and work hard, but are creative and able to solve problems on their own and help the business solve problems.” -Sheila Smith
