Scott Lykins is a professional cellist who grew up in the Brainerd area, left to pursue educational and career goals, and returned with some big ideas.  In 2009 he co-founded the Lakes Area Music Festival (LAMF).  LAMF started as six free orchestral concert experiences and has grown into year round orchestral experiences with a burst of opportunities in late summer.  The concerts aren’t the only opportunities LAMF bring to the Brainerd lakes region.  Childrens’ camps, opportunities for high school kids to receive direction from prof

Last week we had the chance to talk with visiting musicians who made up the 2nd Annual Bonfire Chamber Music Festival in Grand Rapids.  Mary Ellen Patnaude (Haupert) is originally from Grand Rapids and she is the brainchild of this intimate chamber music celebration in the woods of northern Minnesota.

LAMF

The Lakes Area Music Festival(LAMF) creates ongoing arts experiences throughout the year for adults and youth in the Brainerd Lakes Area.  Each summer LAMF organizes an extensive series creating accessible chamber music over the course of several weeks.  This summer, 53 unique events are happening over the course of 22 days.  LAMF Executive Director Scott Lykins spoke on the morning show about the line-up.  Orchestra concerts, wine and beer tastings, professional ballet,  and outdoor yoga classes - one of which will be accompanied by Lykins, a professional cellist, another will be accompanied by a string quintet - are just a sampling of the offerings LAMF has created this summer.  LAMF outreach also includes concerts and education at area libraries, jails, childrens centers and a variety of other locations around the Brainerd Lakes Area.  Most events are free to attend with LAMF asking for a donation in lieu of ticket costs. Bonfires and stringed instruments go hand in hand... there's something familiar about that combination of a camp fire and a guitar or ukelele.  A group in Grand Rapids, MN is taking this notion to the next level adding chamber music to the mix with the first ever Bonfire Chamber Music Festival.  We spoke with Mary Ellen Haupert, Heidi Wick, Nancy Oliveros, and David Marty on the morning show about this unique, intimate and cultural phenomenon taking place in Grand Rapids July 27th and 28th at the Reif Center.
