Deer Hunting

Deer Hunting continues through the week in northern Minnesota - did you get yer deer yet?

We talked with local hunter Heather Hansen about her traditions and how she gets ready for the season.

Marshall from the Timberjay newspaper fills us in this Friday on a big turnout in Orr about community concerns over a recent crime spree in the region.  Orr and St. Louis County residents are organizing and communicating with St. Louis County police about how to make their area safer.  We also hear of a proposal to merge the 5 community colleges in northern Minnesota and (of course) deer hunting opener!

The DNR conducted surveillance around a CWD-positive captive deer facility near Merrifield starting in the 2017 hunting season.

In February 2019, the DNR confirmed chronic wasting disease in a wild deer found in Crow Wing County less than 1/2 a mile from the infected captive facility. Based on this discovery, the DNR designated a new CWD management zone, deer permit area 604, in north central Minnesota for the 2019 hunting season.

Are you a hunter?  After you get your deer or game it turns out there's something to be learned from what is left behind - that offal gut pile.

nounnoun: offal; plural noun: offals

Are you a deer hunter, live with someone who is, or has a friend or relative who hunts deer?

The University of Minnesota researcher, Joe Bump and his graduate student, Ellen Candler are doing research to better understand what and when animals use deer gut piles provided by hunters across Minnesota.

KAXE-KBXE volunteer David Harrington spoke with retired conservation officer Jeff Birchem and his 13 year old daughter Johanna during the Beltrami Island Christmas Bird Count in December.  They discussed the importance of using copper bullets rather than lead bullets while hunting. Johanna hunts with copper bullets and nabbed two bucks this fall using them.  Take a listen to the segment to learn more about why copper is the healthier choice while hunting.   Thanks to Johanna and Jeff for taking the time to chat!

Timberjay Newspaper

Every Friday morning we check in with Marshall Helmberger about the stories they've been covering at the Timberjay newspaper.  This week his topics were the Mining Tax Guide, Representative Emmer's "the Miner Act", a study on the impact of climate change on winter recreation tourism and how the changes of the deer permit areas in NE MN will impact the moose population.

Meadow Kouffeld is the MN & Western Upper Peninsula Regional Biologist for the Ruffed Grouse Society and the American Woodcock Society.  She stopped by today to talk about the national grouse hunt in Grand Rapids and state drumming survey inconsistencies.

She also had a practical, pointed reminder to deer hunters for this weekend's opening hunting weekend.  WEAR A HARNESS!

The Firearms Deer Hunting Opener is November 4th and the DNR predicts a good deer season barring any unforeseen unusual weather. Deer numbers are up following three years of conservative harvest regulations designed to rebuild the population, coupled with three relatively mild winters.

As a result, more antlerless permits are available this year, and hunters in many parts of the state will have additional opportunities to harvest more deer.

Fall is here and with that so is hunting season.  John Bauer and Heidi Holtan spoke with Conservation Officer Sarah Grell on the Friday Morning Show.
