Craft breweries in Bemidji, Grand Rapids, Aitkin, Brainerd and five other breweries in the Mississippi Headwaters basin are spreading the word about the connection between healthy forests and clean water.  It’s called the “Forest Friendly Brewery” project.  Water from the forests of the 5-million acre Mississippi Headwaters basin is the primary ingredient in their beer.

Upstream Homebrewers

According to Charlie Parson, the history of Upstream Homebrewers goes back several years. “The club started in Grand Rapids with a rising tide of brewers, and then that tide ebbed and some laggards from Bemidji decided that they would re-do it over here, so they started one in Bemidji called the Boreal Brewers. After about 20 years, I suppose, that flagged a bit and it restarted in Grand Rapids.

Northern Community Radio launched a new program called Let's Visit this summer.  Each month we focus on one community or area in northern Minnesota.  Our first visit had us traveling to Crosby, MN.  It did not disappoint and we are definitely going back!  Crosby was at a crossroads after the mining industry pulled out of the area nearly 30 years ago.  Since that time the community has re-established itself as a recreation destination and the shift has had a direct, positive impact on economy, livability and community growth.  In this segment of Let's Visit, we connect with Laura Huisinga w
