Molly Olson from the Ely Folk School told us about some fantastic opportunities happening this month at the school and she also told us about the Winter Festival that runs from now thru February 11th in Ely.  Slovenian Ravioli, egg writing, rug knotting, beginner carpentry and even a class on tracking animals in the snow are just a few of the options the Ely Folk School has put together this month.  Check out their website for a full calendar.

Katie Marshall, Executive Director of the MacRostie Art Center in Grand Rapids told us all about the arts happenings in the Grand Rapids area on the morning show today.  Vibrant art, cupcakes, fudge, photography by our own Torndado Bob, free kids movies, a student art show and jazz and blues music at the VFW are just a few of the highlights of tonight's First Friday events in Grand Rapids.

 Did you know there are nearly 3,300 artists and creative workers in Itasca, Lake and St. Louis Counties or that 25% of people who attend arts events in those counties travel more than two hours to do so? The Creative MN study is a comprehensive analysis of the economic impact the arts have across Minnesota. This year, 15  regions were assessed.  Of those 15 regions, the Iron Range's nonprofit arts and cultural organizations brought $12.3M into the economic engine of the Itasca, Lake and St. Louis counties.

Nick DeVries creates pottery that  melds functionality with fine art.  The skills he honed as a production potter throwing more than 300,000 pieces combined with his natural instincts of design and artistry have resulted in a body of work that is utilitarian while also gallery quality.   In this segment of Area Voices, he discusses his artistic path. 

MacRostie Art Center

We check in with Katie Marshall from the MacRostie Art Center in Grand Rapids every First Friday.  She was in the studio this morning telling Heidi and John and our listeners about all the great stuff happening in Grand Rapids this weekend.  In addition to the usual First Friday events, Winter Glow Festival kicks off today at 4pm in downtown Grand Rapids complete with Mr. and Mrs. Claus!
