Cross Country skiers from across the planet will converge on Bemidji this weekend to compete in the 38th MN Finlandia Ski Marathon.  Mike Huerbin has been race director for the event for 20 years.  In this Area Voices segment, he breaks down the various races skiers can compete in, the various events happening around the races and he shares history of the race which, at one time, was a two day, 100k event!

David Eichholz and Ted Manderfeld make up to music and comedy act Deuces Wild, Dueling Pianos.  They will perform this Saturday at the Sanford Center in Bemidji.  We spoke with David on the morning show about his journey to this unique career!

Every First Friday Area Voices Producer Katie Carter tips us off to what's happening in the arts scenes in Bemidji and other communities.  Today she discussed an art exhibit at the Crossing Arts Alliance in Brainerd and theatrical experiences at Central Lakes College in Brainerd. Marlena Myles is one of few Dakota women creating digital art.  Her work highlights indigenous culture with aesthetic appeal and educational opportunities.  In addition to gallery showings,  her many projects include illustrations for the books Kikta Wo/Kikta Ye!

Kelly Schultz has a fascination with fascinators and hats.  Her Bemidji-based Angeline Alice Millinery began after she was was inspired by head adornments worn by guests at the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in April of 2011.

In addition to its multiple gallery spaces exhibiting artwork created in locales ranging from across town to across the globe, the Watermark Art Center is home to an educational space that hosts learning opportunties for artists of all ages on a regular basis.  Beadwork pouches, jewelry, paper marbeling, christmas ornament creating and paper sculptures are just a few classes offered during the past year.

Bemidji Community Theater brings its second run of performances of the farce Boeing Boeing to the Chief Theater this weekend.  We spoke with Derrick Houle and Julie Kaiser on the morning show about it. 

Delina White’s I Am Anishinaabe fashion designs have walked the runways of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the world-renowned Indian Market in Santa Fe, New Mexico. And they will soon make their way to the Northwest Indian Community Development Center in Bemidji.
