The Aitkin County Private Woodlands Committee Winter Tour is Saturday December 7th from 8-4:30 at the McGregor Community Center.  The tour is called “Taking A New Look At My Land”.  This day of learning helps us to understand how our private lands are part of a complex landscape, connected to the world.  For instance: 

The timber harvested locally plays a part in a global economy. 

The Ripple River Gallery in Aitkin, MN is a destination gallery tucked in the woods that has those who discover it returning again and again.  Bob Carls and Amy Sharpe opened their gallery with only a few featured artists, including themselves.  Today they sell work from more than 60 artists.  In this segment of Area Voices, they share how it happened and what life is like running a gallery.

Close to Home discovers world class art as well as local and regional exhibits at the Jaques Art Center in Aitkin, MN.  Host Grant Frashier talks with Braden Heft, President of the Board of Directors.  

The Jaques Art Center has been bringing visual art experiences to the Aitkin area for 22 years.  This weekend kicked off their latest exhibit, Community Canvas, created by people who live in and love the Aitkin area.  We spoke with Barden Heft the President of the Jaques Board of Directors.  He told us the history of the Jaques Art Center, explained the Community Canvas project and talked about what the Jaques Art Center brings to Aitkin.

When David and Janet Gilbertson moved to their farm in 2002, Janet told her husband she'd like to grow some apple trees...so David planted 400 of them! Since then the Gilbertsons have been adding trees every year at what has become Gilby's Nursery and Orchard in Aitkin.
