Icelandic musicians Silva Thordardottir and Steingrímur Teague have released a new jazz project, Silva and Steini.

Silva and Steini's new album contains versions of jazz standards, with intention in every unhurried note.

In a world encompassed with fast action and stimulation, Silva and Steini are a musical salve.

More Than You Know is the Icelandic duo’s debut album, a collection of unhurried versions of jazz standards; some of which are over 100 years old.

“For music, at least, it's easier to feel like you are making a difference. You know that you are expressing something that is worth listening to and also maybe you're more likely [to do it] because there are less things to choose from.”

While on New Music, Steini talked about the intention behind that unhurried space given to each note on the album.

"We both had our own reasons for wanting more space, you know, to have less going on," she said. " ... [It] gave you a chance to kind of deliberate every sound that you hear ... and you have time to process it and be in it."

For a small country, Iceland has produced and continues to support a good number of musicians like Silva & Steini. Acts like Björk, Sigur Rós, Of Monsters and Men, Kaleo and fellow recent rising jazz musician, Laufey.

Much like Northern Minnesota, because it is a small place and there are just fewer people, Steini feels it easier to be involved in the creative space.

“For music, at least, it's easier to feel like you are making a difference. You know that you are expressing something that is worth listening to and also maybe you're more likely [to do it] because there are less things to choose from.”
