MINNEAPOLIS — When songwriters show up for interviews, they usually come alone or with other members of the band.

That was not the case for Sophia Spiegel of Minneapolis indie funk band Dilly Dally Alley. She joined Centerstage Minnesota via Zoom alongside Adam Tucker, the producer of Dilly Dally Alley’s debut album Make You Whole.

The two shared how the songs slowly changed throughout the recording process, as well as the band itself.

“We actually went into the studio as a four-piece,” Spiegel said. “We had no intention of adding more.”

In its final form, Make You Whole has a full, jazzy sound, with trumpet and saxophone throughout. It is hard to picture the songs without the additional parts and band members needed to play them.

“I kind of forgot that all that stuff got added after the fact, that’s crazy,” Tucker said with a laugh. “It’s such a part of the music now, I can’t even imagine what it was like without it.”
