Earth Matters: Watermark Exhibit with a Global Message

Fiber art show inspires critical thinking about the human factor in ecological relationships

We're really expansive in our definition of fiber and textiles, so we have folks working in pretty traditional techniques, but we have folks experimenting with people working in video and performance…there's often aspects of work that combine ceramics and metal and wood, and it just kind of goes on and on, and I think it's all those perspectives and backgrounds and interests that really create such a vibrant and engaging group. – Karena Bennett Executive Director SDA

TheSurface Design Association’s (SDA) thought-provoking, collaborative exhibit “Earth Matters” begs the assessment of human impact on the ecology of our world. The show can be viewed thru the end of October at theWatermark Art Center in Bemidji. Executive Director of SDA Karena Bennett discusses the history of the SDA and the powerful exhibit in this Area Voices segment.

I think that those threads that go through the exhibition are really, really compelling and kind of continue to add these layers…it keeps getting more and more complicated… you leave and you have clarity in some ways, but you have a million more questions and you want to explore more and you want to learn more. – Karena Bennett

Thursday evening, the public is invited to an online event featuring exhibit juror Nnenna Okore as well as award winning artists from the show. To register and attend the online event, go here!
