Weekly Phenology Report: March 7, 2016

Drew Brockett via Season Watch FB Page
Fox

Each week, our resident phenologist John Latimerprovides listeners with a full report of what has been happening out in nature over the course of the week.  This week the report includes an early thunderstorm, aspen buds, pussy willow flowers, butterfly watch, a robin clarification lesson, and what birds to watch for in the coming days.  Bog walking, lakes melting, the end of the lake skating, and the sound of a saw whet owl...  So much to learn in this phenology report!  Even though it feels like winter today, spring is coming folks and we can be assured of that by the phenological clues out in nature!

If you have comments or questions related to phenology, send John a noteor leave us a message on our talkback line at 218.999.9876!  We love hearing from out listeners, so don't hold back!

As a mail carrier in rural Grand Rapids, Minn., for 35 years, John Latimer put his own stamp on a career that delivered more than letters. Indeed, while driving the hundred-mile round-trip daily route, he passed the time by observing and recording seasonal changes in nature, learning everything he could about the area’s weather, plants and animals, and becoming the go-to guy who could answer customers’ questions about what they were seeing in the environment.
