University of MN PhD Student Ellen Candler STILL Wants to Know About Your Offal (Gut Pile)

Oct 16, 2019

Are you a hunter?  After you get your deer or game it turns out there's something to be learned from what is left behind - that offal gut pile.

nounnoun: offal; plural noun: offals

  1. the entrails and internal organs of an animal used as food."eating pieces of braised offal turned his stomach"
    • refuse or waste material."the packing plant dumped its offal into the stream"
    • decomposing animal flesh."gulls pecking at piles of offal from the narwhal hunt"

Minnesota provides a unique opportunity to look across the three biomes at the variety of species visiting the gut piles. This data is being collected for both archery and firearm hunting, and location in the state. You will be asked to sign up for a harvest method (archery or firearm) and a biome (harvest location).

Questions about how you can be a citizen scientist and how you can be involved should be directed to Ellen Candler.
