Gaelynn Lea carved some time out for us to talk about her new album, Learning How To Stay, which is out now.
After winning the NPR Tiny Desk Contest, Gaelynn and her husband, Paul, played around the world covering 42 states and 7 countries. In the past, Gaelynn has played and recorded her music solo with the help of a looping pedal.
Recording with a full band for the first time on this album, Gaelynn Lea recruited some heavy hitters to help her out. The official band includes: Al Church (Actual Wolf, Andy Cook), Dave Mehling (MRDR), Martin Dosh (Andrew Bird) and Andrew Foreman (Davina & The Vagabonds, Sarah Morris, Reina Del Cid) with guests ranging from Alan Sparhawk (Low, Retribution Gospel Choir), Haley (FKA Haley Bonar), Jeremy Ylvisaker (Andrew Bird, Haley), Bob Boilen (NPR Music) and others. As I said, heavy hitters.
She sings live versions of the lead song from the new album, 'Bound By A Thread', and 'I Wait'; a wondefully powerful song about the Disability Rights Movement in America, waiting for change, and waiting for it to be taken seriously.
Gaelynn Lea adds a very needed voice to this world (singing and otherwise). Really. If you don't believe me, just listen.
