Does Anyone Get Books as Gifts Anymore?

The holiday season is upon us and as I was planning my shopping list, I realized that for someone who loves books, I don’t buy them as gifts for anyone. I also don’t receive them as gifts for myself anymore. I think it’s because buying a book as a gift for someone is probably one of the most complicated tasks, fraught with uncertainty, overthinking, and the fear of rejection: Have they already read it? Will they like it? What if they don’t read it? Worse, yet, what if they hate it? Is there another act in the world where we bare our souls and leave ourselves vulnerable than buying a book for someone?
