"I have a lot of friends and family members who are two spirit and it really hurts me when they have issues about being bullied and so I'm here to support my two spirit relatives in being who they are." - Delina White
Delina White's Native American inspired clothing line I Am Anishinaabe brings the beauty and details of the great lakes and woodland style to women, men, children and two spirit people all over the world. Her line will be shown on the terrace of the Walker Art Center tomorrow night, June 13th in a special gender fluid fashion show in honor of Minnesota's Pride Month.
In this episode of Area Voices, Delina discusses the native history behind her Great Lakes and Woodlands styles, the I Am Anishinaabe line, her support of two-spirit people and the upcoming show at the Walker that has LGTBQ sensitivity in every detail from the models to the hosts to the DJ.
"You know it's fun and it's a scary thing too...you feel like you're helping to liberate them and to be really supportive about who they are but then you fear the persecution that they face in the world...We got her all dressed up and when she walked onto the stage it was the biggest roar of the crowd. Everybody was like, "ooooooh," ... because she was just so beautiful. And then, a few weeks later ,she contacts me and she says. I wore a skirt out in public for the first time....And so I felt really happy about that. That's kind of like where my journey is taking me it's just kind of a natural progress." - Delina White
