David McDonald: Stepping Up for Peace in South Sudan

The people of South Sudan have faced tragedy, trauma, some hope andmuch despair.  David McDonald knows this first hand and he's had the privilege of getting to know many South Sudanese first hand.  He's worked around the globe as an international news journalist, an independent multimedia producer, a teacher, a Peace Corps Volunteer, and a writer. His recent work as a humanitarian journalism trainer for the people of South Sudan made him instrumental in setting up South Sudan's first community radio station.  McDonald spoke with us on the morning show about life and politics in South Sudan, the fascinating people he met and worked with at the Protection of Civilians(PoC) site in Bentiu South Sudan, and the creative projects he facilitated with South Sudanese youth.   He'll present the program "Step Up for Peace"  at the Grand Rapids library Thursday, August 3 at 6pm.

Maggie is a rural public radio guru; someone who can get you through both minor jams and near catastrophes and still come out ahead of the game. She pens our grants, reports to the Board of Directors and helps guide our station into the dawn of a new era. Maggie is a locavore to the max (as evidenced on Wednesday mornings), brings in months’ worth of kale each fall, has heat on in her office 12 months a year, and drinks coffee out of a plastic 1987 KAXE mug every day. Doting parents and grandparents, she and her husband Dennis live in the asphalt jungle of East Nary.
