Phenology Talkbacks: Student Reports 11/17/20

Gary Payne via KAXE/KBXE Season Watch Facebook Page

The Phenology Show makes me feel close to nature. - Pearl Newstok

Tuesdays are one of our favorite days because... Phenology!  Phenology is the biological nature of events as they relate to climate.  Phenology Talkbacks are an opportunity for listeners to connect with the station about nature.  Each week, resident phenologist John Latimer gathers the phenological correspondence and classroom observations sent his way.  He shares and discusses them every Tuesday morning, shortly before 7am. Thanks to everyone who contributes to the Phenology Talkbacks! We are grateful!

This week we heard from Kelliher, Hill City, Prairie Creek and Memphis, TN!  Mr. Marohn reported from Pike Lake Elementary.  We are so thankful for these kids and their teachers!  They truly make our week.  These voices, these kids connecting to their natural world...  That's some good stuff!  If you are grateful this kind of programming exists in the world, pledge your support of Northern Commuity Radio right now and ensure it continues!

Kelliher kids report deer, skunks and raccoons and a horse growing its winter coat.

Hill City students observed coyote tracks, woodpeckers and an owl!

And as always, don't hesitate to let us know what you are noticing! Send your observations via email or voicemail at 218-999-9876.  You could even record a voice memo on your phone and send your thought that way!

Don't forget to check out our KAXE-KBXE Season Watch page on Facebook!  We think you're going to love it!  No drama, no Covid, no election news... just nature!

If you are a teacher interested in getting your class on the phenology trail, John has created a whole phenology curriculum!  Send him an email for more information!

As a mail carrier in rural Grand Rapids, Minn., for 35 years, John Latimer put his own stamp on a career that delivered more than letters. Indeed, while driving the hundred-mile round-trip daily route, he passed the time by observing and recording seasonal changes in nature, learning everything he could about the area’s weather, plants and animals, and becoming the go-to guy who could answer customers’ questions about what they were seeing in the environment.
