Album of the Week: Hat Drop by Sugar on the Roof

Hat Drop, out now

After a week of talking about hope and new life during our Spring Member Drive (pledge here!), Hat Drop by Sugar on the Roof, fits right in. Hope about the revival of music from long ago, hope about the future and new life of that music, hope about local musicians because they've brought so much joy, hope from musicians who think thoughtfully about covering that old time music and how to bring it into a world so different from when it came.

Sugar on the Roof is a band from Hibbing and Duluth that plays old time music with a 2021 take on both originals and making covers relevant. Megan Orwig Reynolds is on rhythm guitar and takes the lead vocals, with her voice shining so beautifully on this recording. Jefferson Reynolds gives us the banjo, and the unexpected trombone getting a well-deserved spotlight throughout the record. Clancy Ward plays a mean fiddle, and also contributes lead and background vocals, harmonizing with Megan as though they've been singing together for decades.

If you're looking for music to bring you joy, check out Hat Dropand listen to KAXE/KBXE this next week to hear more!

The music director at KAXE since 2014, Kari (pronounced Car-ee) Hedlund reviews music on the daily. She also hosts New Music every Wednesday (2 and 10 p.m.) and Sunday (noon), along with the KAXE Morning Show on Thursdays.
