COHASSET — The Grand Rapids Garden Club hosts “Phenology in the Garden,” the fall meeting of the 8th District Horticultural Society on Saturday, Sept. 30, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Cohasset.
The main speaker is KAXE Staff Phenologist John Latimer, who has over 40 years of experience tracking seasonal changes of plants and animals and how these changes compare year to year. His talk will focus on natural events leading to winter and what we can expect in the future. The event will be 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. and Latimer will speak at 1 p.m.

Heidi Holtan and Latimer spoke with Dave Wildung from the Grand Rapids Garden Club on a recent KAXE Morning Show about the event.
“My phenology tends to be what’s happening outside in the natural world, and yours tends to be more attuned to the gardening world, which is a really interesting perspective,” Latimer said. “I think gardeners … probably are, without realizing it, doing phenology, in a sense that they know what day they’re going to put their plants in the ground.”
The day also includes awards, raffles and lunch. Cost is $25. Registration deadline is Saturday, Sept. 23.
