Engaging Minnesotans with Phenology: About Us

Minnesota landscape
Landscape near Lutsen, MN

"Engaging Minnesotans with Phenology" is a collaborative project between Northern Community Radio and the University of Minnesota, and funded by the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources.

A large portion of the project involves the development of a state-wide phenology community, with an emphasis on reaching K-12 students. Using KAXE's phenology program as a model, we hold workshops throughout the state training educators, youth leaders, and naturalists on the basics of observing and studying phenology and reporting their observations to local radio stations. In addition, KAXE is building an enhanced phenology resource library for other radio stations and listeners, comprised of daily, weekly, and seasonal phenology reports, interviews with local scientists, and a new podcast. While the effort is multi-faceted, our goal is exemplified by the 'phenology talkbacks' program, which is comprised of phenology reports from students across the state: listen below for an example!

In addition, the University of Minnesota will be sharing stories from Minnesota through a website. You will be able to enter the site through a map portal and explore profiles of select plants and animals. You'll be able to learn from other phenologists about patterns and clues they look for when observing seasonal change, and how this relates to Minnesota's changing climate. Finally, you will be able to access an "Observer's Toolkit" with tips, resources, a printable calendar, and projects to help you make your own phenology observations!
