Rob Harrell's Wink: a 12 year-old's cancer battle and a great story for middle readers

Rob Harrell is an internationally syndicated comic strip illustrator. In 2006 he was diagnosed with and treated for a rare form of eye cancer. When the young daughter of a friend of his was diagnosed with cancer, Rob decided to share his story, to put his experience to paper and wrote his new novel Wink. The story follows the character Ross Maloy, who wants nothing else but to hang out with his best friends Abby and Isaac, and be a normal seventh grader. But a diagnosis of a life-threatening rare eye cancer changes everything. Friends start disappearing, his fellow students stare and ask rude questions, the treatment is painful and often has embarrassing side effects. But along the way, Ross discovers unexpected friendships and an unusual but strong community forms around him to help him get through it.
