Mathew Schum grew up in Minnesota and went on to become an art curator and professor of art history at Cal State Bakersfield. He curated the Nemeth Art Center's 40th Anniversary exhibit that will be up thru July 15th. The multi-media, multi-artist show includes work from contemporary artists Joan Bemel Iron Moccasin,Kelly Sena, Aaron Spangler, Damien Davis and Jon Gomez alongside classic works of European old master paintings, the Nemeth's collection of African arts and craft works and images from pioneering wildlife photographer George Shiras. Mathew shared his inspirations for the multi-artist, multi-media collection in this segment of Area Voices. This Saturday from 3-6pm, he will be at the Nemeth as the art center hosts a public reception celebrating the collection with presentations by professor and author Mary Wingerd who wrote North Country: the Making of Minnesota, White Earth based artist and Anishinaabeg historian Simon Zornes, and twin cities based art critic and curator Sheila Dickinson. The public is welcome to the reception and symposium.
