Hercules And Love Affair: Disco's Not Dead

The disco project of New York-based DJ Andy Butler, Hercules and Love Affair cites influences ranging from Chicago to Magic Carpet to Soundpatrol, all of which rear their heads on a self-titled debut album that conjures images of Saturday Night Fever and '70s punk.

Hercules and Love Affair's sound is distinctly experimental — this is no mere nostalgia trip — but the synthesizers and sounds of throbbing bass add up to an injunction to get on the floor, revival-style. The duo's self-titled debut was released last summer after its single "Blind" (featuring guest vocals from Antony Hegarty of Antony and the Johnsons) generated a great deal of anticipatory buzz. Since then, the album has experienced critical and commercial success for its infectious disco sound and impressive emotional range.

In a session with host David Dye, the group discusses its origins, while Butler explains his fascination with Greek mythology.
