Rolling Down the River to the West
Bank
By
Doug MacRostie. "The West
Bank" has historically been a
hotbed for music in Minnesota.
Part of the Cedar-Riverside
neighborhood in Minneapolis, it's
bordered by the Mississippi River
to the north and east. This
creative community is fueled by
the close proximity of various
cultures; there are urban poor of
diverse ethnic backgrounds,
college students, and middle-class
urbanites. Back in the 60's, when
some kid named Bob Zimmerman was
learning folk music and some young
chick named Bonnie Raitt recorded
her debut CD, one of the most
influential blues and folk trios
formed:
Koerner, Ray and Glover. The
two surviving members,
Spider John Koerner and
Tony Glover performed in early
July at Mill City Museum on the
West Bank and we'll hear that
performance this Thursday night at
6 on
Centerstage MN, with a big
thanks to our sister-station
KFAI for capturing the concert
for us...

Goodbye,
Again by Maddi Frick
And it is time to say goodbye once
more. And once again I must
express my gratitude for the
wonderful time I’ve had at
KAXE.
From always being fed to enjoying
concerts at sunset to getting a
prime view of the construction
across the road to knowing about every public event
in the area, KAXE has shown me so
much hospitality and welcomed me
with open arms. I think the most
peaceful day I had this summer was
when I got my lunch to go from
Brewed, drove back to the station,
only to discover Sam Miltich and
the Clearwater Hot Club playing
music under the tent for children
from the library. The sun was
shining down as I ate the most
delicious turkey sandwich and
listened to the most happy music.

Mark Olson of The Jayhawks Closing
the Tent
On
Monday, September 13th,
KAXE is very excited to
welcome MN music legend
Mark Olson to KAXE for our 2nd
Annual Closing the Tent Event,
under the Rotary Tent at KAXE’s
Amphitheater in Grand Rapids
starting at 7pm. Mark Olson was
founding member and principle
songwriter with The Jayhawks, the
most acclaimed band to emerge out
of the alt-country scene in the
90’s, and you can still hear their
impact and influence in music
today.Inspired by the daily
struggles that everyday people
face in their lives, Mark Olson’s
music is both timely and timeless.
He’ll be accompanied by
world-musician Inguun Ringvold on
harmonies and percussion.

Danny Schmidt with 'Houses Sing'
From his yet-to-be-released album
:) It was a beautiful performance!
On Friday, August 27th, KAXE
brought back singer/songwriter
Danny Schmidt to Grand Rapids for
a concert at KAXE's Amphitheater
under the Rotary Tent. Very seldom
does KAXE bring back the same
musicians two years in a row...but
Danny Schmidt is brilliant - quite
possibly one the country's best
singer songwriters. Check out more

Help
Save PTFP!
PTFP is an acronym for a federal
program: the Public
Telecommunications Facilities
Program. PTFP is in trouble. PTFP
is the place public radio and
television stations go to apply
for federal funds to help build
new stations. It also keeps
existing stations on the air when
the equipment wears out, and helps
public radio stations prepare for
or recover from hurricanes, floods
or other natural disasters. It is
a good program. It has just 3
employees and low overhead. PTFP
helped
KAXE replace an ailing
transmitter in the past, and we
hope it will help us build
KBXE in the future. It is a
small federal program; a drop in
the proverbial budgetary bucket.
PTFP received a total $44 million
in 2011, most of which will be
distributed to public radio and
television stations. Yet, for some
reason, PTFP has been targeted as
one of only 4 programs in the
whole government as examples of
what the President wants to line
item veto this year. Efforts to
cancel the program have come from
both Democrats and Republicans in
congress. They have linked
cancellation of PTFP with lowering
the deficit. At the root of this,
there seems to be general
misunderstanding about PTFP...Read

Report
Your Moose Sightings
We talked with Mark Johnson, Executive
Director of the Minnesota Deer Hunters
Association, about what he learned as
a member of the "Moose Advisory
Committee". The Minnesota moose
population is facing a lot of
biological and natural threats, and
has seen sharp declines in the
Northwestern part of the state. While
the decline has not been as dramatic
in Northeastern Minnesota, biologists
and others interested in moose
populations are still concerned. Mark
indicated that we have a lot to learn
about what is affecting the
population, and one of the ways that
you can help is to report your moose
sightings on a special website. Please
log your sighting(s) at http://www.nrri.umn.edu/moose/general/sightings.html.

Made Possible by
the MN Arts &
Cultural
Heritage Fund
A
cool thing
happened a
couple weeks
ago. Centerstage
MN,
KAXE's
program
showcasing the
talents of MN
musicians, was
added to the
regular Saturday
night line-up of
KSRQ,
Pioneer 90.1 in
Thief River
Falls (at the
peak tune-in
time of 11pm).
This is exciting
news and a big
deal for the
artist and
musicians who
are featured.
The purpose of
the show is to
highlight the
talent of local
musicians - with
this expansion,
these voices are
now reaching a
broader audience
of ears. And
other pieces
like interviews
on RealGoodWords
and commentary
by Aaron Brown
and Michael
Goldberg have
also been picked
up and aired on
other stations
including
KVSC in St.
Cloud and
WTIP in
Grand Marais.
This explosion
of shared
content was not
by accident...Read

IT'S
YOUR BUSINESS TO KNOW
KAXE would like to thank all
our business underwriters for their
strong support. These businesses understand the value of having
their name associated with KAXE.
Why? Because KAXE members support the businesses that
support KAXE. They will sometimes drive
50 miles to buy something at a business
that supports KAXE versus going across the
street to one that doesn't. Will
you provide us with a name of a business
you think should underwrite/support on
KAXE?
