Wii-kly Update: Three New Classic Games Announced for Wii Shop Channel

Today Nintendo adds three new classic games to the popular Wii(TM) video game system's Wii Shop Channel. The games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the channel every Monday. Wii owners with ahigh-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points(TM) to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

Tecmo Bowl(TM) (NES(R), 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): Tecmo Bowl pits the player versus the computer in 11-game, single-elimination playoff action. Players also can go head-to-head with a human opponent in action or coach mode. The player can select from 12 teams. On offense there are usually two run and two pass plays to choose from. The player takes control of the quarterback before the snap and then either hands off to the running back or works through his receiver progression from the top to the bottom of the screen. Defense consists of trying to guess which offensive play the opponent will select and then taking control of one of the defensive players before the snap. A very simple power-meter system is used for kicking field goals, extra points and punts.

Sonic Spinball(TM) (Sega Genesis, 1-4 players, 800 Wii Points): Dr. Eggman (aka Dr. Robotnik) has taken over Mt. Mobius and turned it into a mechanical base. He is using energy from the magma flowing under the volcano to power his Veg-O-Fortress. He has the power to transform helpless animals into robots. Sonic the Hedgehog must take down this fortress to free the enslaved animals. The only way to make that happen is to trigger an eruption in the volcano it's built on. Sonic knows this can be done by removing the Chaos Emeralds that keep the volcano stable. Dr. Eggman, however, is also aware of the fragile relationship that exists between the emeralds and the mountain, and he's set up an elaborate Pinball Defense System to make sure the precious jewels don't go anywhere.

Double Dungeons (TurboGrafx16, 1-2 players, 600 Wii Points): Double Dungeons is a dungeon role-playing game that features smooth-scrolling 3-D game play. Two players can play at the same time, which makes this game truly stand out from the rest. There are 22 unique scenarios, spread out among six levels. The higher the level is, the harder the scenario. Because each scenario is independent, players can choose to start the game from any scenario other than the final one. Players defeat monsters in each dungeon to gain experience while searching for the "key" that opens the door to the room with the boss. They buy equipment at the shop, team up with characters and defeat the boss to clear a scenario. Players must conquer all 21 scenarios from levels 1 through 5 to obtain passwords. If they obtain all of them, they make their way to the final scenario!

Queasy Games’ “Everyday Shooter”, took home the $10,000 distribution deal, with runner-up distribution deals of $5,000 awarded to both “Roboblitz," an action game by Naked Sky Entertainment and Cryptic Sea ’s “Blast Miner” puzzle game.  Together, the three award winners will kick off GameTap’s online distribution program for independent games.

EA SAYS THAT HIT SONGS ARE ALWAYS IN SEASON FOR THE SIMS
The Sims™ 2 Seasons Soundtrack To Include Simlish Versions of Songs from Lily Allen, The Veronicas, The String Cheese Incident and More!

REDWOOD CITY , Calif. – March 7, 2007 – Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS) today revealed the impressive soundtrack for The Sims™ 2 Seasons.  Fans of The Sims games will be thrilled to learn they can hear their favorite musical acts—artists like Lily Allen, The Veronicas and The String Cheese Incident—reinterpret favorite hits in Simlish, the native language of The Sims. The Sims is the blockbuster video game franchise that celebrates self-expression through virtual, everyday life.

“Recording “SMILE” was a great experience for me. Sometimes revenge can be fun,” said Lily Allen.  “But getting to sing it again—IN SIMLISH—came very naturally and it was hilarious to practice!   The silly language and whimsy of The Sims games are a perfect fit for the song.  I was laughing the entire time!”

“Being well-versed in improvisation, we felt up for the challenge of re-recording our song, ‘Close Your Eyes’ in Simlish. The Sims' language may be a bit unfamiliar, but musically it actually translates fairly smoothly; its cadence is quite musical,” said Kyle Hollingsworth of The String Cheese Incident.

"EA leads the industry in creating groundbreaking music for our  top-selling titles, and The  Sims is perhaps the most unique opportunity in the world today. It takes a special kind of artist to accept the challenge and have fun with the experience. Lily Allen, The Veronicas and String Cheese Incident all brought tremendous creativity and enthusiasm to their sessions, and the result is some of the most surprising songs yet in a Sims game. We're proud to have their hits in 'Simlish' for our worldwide audience of more than 85 million Sims fans," said Steve Schnur, Executive of Worldwide Music and Marketing at EA.

Fans are encouraged to check out Simlish tracks of The String Cheese Incident, The Veronicas, as well as a Sims-animated video for Lily Allen’s “Smile” by visiting http://sims2.com.

PHILIPS amBX BRINGS SECOND LIFE TO THE REAL WORLD

Dedicated amBX-enabled Environment will bring the Popular 3D Virtual World Out of the Screen and into the Real World

GDC 2007, San Francisco, CA – March 6, 2007 – Philips today announced the integration of amBX, its revolutionary ‘ambient experiences’ technology, in Second Life®, the 3D virtual world from Linden Lab®. By licensing its technology to Rivers Run Red to produce dedicated amBX-enabled environments, Philips will offer Second Life users the opportunity to experience their virtual world through real world sensory surround effects such as lighting, air movement and rumble all tuned to events within the virtual world. The amBX agreement also extends to all-new commercially driven experiences for future brand marketing campaigns, and builds on a highly successful relationship between Philips and Rivers Run Red and their long-running involvement with the development of the ‘immersive spaces market’.

Since exploding on the Internet in 2003, Second Life has grown exponentially and today is inhabited by a total of 4,201,216 residents from around the globe, all of which will be able to now have a more enhanced real world experience of the Second Life world.

Comprising a scripting language, software engine and architecture, the amBX platform has been designed to empower interactive entertainment developers and providers with a palette to use light, color, heat, sound and even air flow in the real world during interactive entertainment, delivering all-new user experiences through enabled devices, including the Philips amBX PC Gaming Peripherals range of LED color-controlled lighting, rumble peripherals and desktop fans.

Philips will be creating a further big bang in Second Life’s ‘Grid’ through the development of solutions for open source Second Life client software and the creation of a software development kit (SDK), featuring user tools and props, to allow amBX experiences to be easily authored by existing Second Lifers, creating their own custom real-world effects.

Second Life offers amBX an unparalleled opportunity to bring our revolutionary ambient intelligence technology to an expanding global market of many millions of tech and media savvy users who are not only hungry, but also open-minded for new online experiences,” commented Jo Cooke, Chief Marketing Officer, Philips amBX. “Not only will we be able to offer Second Lifers all kinds of new sensory experiences, but also ‘behind closed doors first looks’ at amBX effects in development and potential amBX-enabled peripherals, with the chance for some to exclusively trial sample them before commercial release. Second Life offers an entirely new market for amBX and we feel this is the start of a very special relationship.”

Philips amBX is the second Philips initiative in Second Life, as a result of the cooperation between Philips Electronics and Rivers Run Red. In November 2006, Philips Design announced its collaboration with Rivers Run Red and presence in Second Life to gain feedback on innovation concepts, engage residents in co-creation and gain a deeper understanding of potential opportunities in this virtual environment.

“The partnership between Rivers Run Red and Philips was originally generated in a Philips Design ‘immersive spaces’ workshop and the new launch means the immersive amBX experience can now be experienced beyond the screen. People will be literally able to reach out and fill their rooms with deep sensory experiences,” commented Justin Bovington, CEO, Rivers Run Red. “The in-world development kit will go beyond collaborative design, we’re also looking at the broader commercial immersive potential including showrooms, advertising and conferences.”

Philips has established a global standard by licensing the amBX technology to interactive entertainment developers, publishers and peripherals manufacturers. Rivers Run Red join a rapidly expanding following of partners supporting amBX-enabled entertainment, games and peripherals, including software developers and publishers Codemasters, THQ, Kuju, Introversion, Gas Powered Games, Revolution, and Sumo Digital, and hardware manufacturers Philips Peripherals & Accessories and SpectraVideo.

Microsoft Announces 512MB Memory Unit for Xbox 360 and Increased Xbox LIVE Arcade Game Size Limit

512MB Memory Unit enhances storage capabilities and choice for Xbox 360 gamers; increased Xbox LIVE Arcade size limit provides additional flexibility for game developers.

SAN FRANCISCO — March 4, 2007 — At the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2007, Microsoft Corp. today announced plans to launch a 512MB Memory Unit for the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system and an increase in the official size limit of Xbox LIVE® Arcade games from 50 MB to 150 MB.

The 512MB Memory Unit, available worldwide beginning April 3, 2007, will retail for an estimated retail price of $49.99 (U.S.) in North America.* The 512MB Memory Unit will be pre-loaded with the hit Xbox LIVE Arcade game “Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved” from developer Bizarre Creations Ltd. for a limited time. The original 64MB Memory Unit will simultaneously drop in price from $39.99 to $29.99 (ERP).*

Eight times larger than the 64MB Memory Unit, the 512MB Memory Unit will provide Xbox 360 owners with vastly expanded storage capabilities for gaming on the go, allowing gamers to easily store and transport their gamer profile and save game data, Xbox LIVE Arcade games and Xbox LIVE Marketplace content. The 512MB Memory Unit also gives Xbox 360 owners the ability to download exclusive content from any of the 45,000 Xbox 360 kiosks accessible at retail outlets worldwide.

Beginning today, the Xbox LIVE Arcade game size limit has increased from 50 MB to 150 MB, giving developers greater flexibility in game design and expanding the opportunity to add advanced game features while still keeping games compact.

“The new size limit offers developers increased flexibility and continued opportunities for innovative game development, while also ensuring that the millions of gamers on Xbox LIVE can continue to easily access, download and play all Xbox LIVE Arcade games on Xbox 360,” said Chris Early , product unit manager for Xbox LIVE Arcade and Microsoft Casual Games at Microsoft. “If you take a look at current games like ‘Roboblitz’ and ‘Small Arms,’ it’s clear that our developers deliver amazing game experiences within a compact size limit. Our focus is on continuing to provide developers with an environment that allows for the creation of cost-efficient games and that nurtures an artistic and creative approach to game development.”

“As we prepare to launch our first Xbox LIVE Arcade game, ‘Boom Boom Rocket,’ we’re able to see how dynamic and creative this platform is,” said Chip Lange, vice president of Online Commerce for Electronic Arts Inc. (EA). “Having ‘Wing Commander Arena’ on Xbox LIVE Arcade allows us to take full advantage of the online play and bring to life a 16-player online arcade experience that delivers unparalleled arcade action.”

This week at GDC, Microsoft will showcase forthcoming Xbox LIVE Arcade games from a cross-section of genres to the game development community:
